Position Summary

The U.S. Mission in Tanzania is inviting applications from qualified candidates for the role of Senior Foreign Service National Investigator (Security Investigator) in the Regional Security Office (RSO).

This position serves as the RSO’s primary liaison with Tanzanian law enforcement and security agencies. The Investigator is the Embassy’s recognised expert advisor on security programs that require extensive coordination with the host nation. The role includes supervising the FSNI Unit, managing a wide range of investigations, and directly conducting sensitive and high-profile cases. The Investigator also supports the protection of Embassy personnel and U.S. government visitors, oversees host nation capacity building, and coordinates Tanzania’s role in the Embassy’s emergency preparedness programs.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment

  • Must obtain and maintain a security certificate
  • Must obtain and maintain a medical certificate
  • Will undergo a background investigation and pre-employment medical exam
  • Must be able to start work within a reasonable timeframe after receiving authorisation and clearance

Education

  • A university degree in law enforcement, criminology, or a related field (or host country equivalent) is required.
  • Applicants must clearly state this in the Education section of their ERA application.

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years as a professional investigator or special agent
  • Proven experience leading complex and high-profile investigations (e.g., fraud, organised crime)
  • Deep understanding of investigative techniques, local legal procedures, and host nation law enforcement structures
  • Applicants must detail this in the Major Duties and Responsibilities section of their ERA application.

Language

  • English: Level IV (Fluent) – speaking, reading, writing, and translation required
  • Kiswahili: Level IV (Fluent) – speaking, reading, writing, and translation required
  • (Language proficiency may be tested.)

Job Knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge of investigative principles and techniques
  • Familiarity with documentary sources of information and local/regional laws (marriage, divorce, adoption, military service)
  • Strong understanding of Tanzanian law enforcement and security agencies, including key contacts and structures
  • Knowledge of Tanzanian customs, official communication practices, and government entities

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to build and maintain high-level contacts within host country security and law enforcement agencies
  • Skilled in conducting sensitive investigations and handling evidence discreetly
  • Capable of supervising and training others effectively
  • Strong writing skills in English and Kiswahili for drafting reports and correspondence
  • Proficiency in collecting, analysing, and presenting data using charts, maps, and written/oral reports
  • Must demonstrate integrity, impartiality, sound judgment, adaptability, and effective public relations skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
