Call for Contractors: Building a Safer, Cleaner Kilombero Market
Creating a healthier space for trade

Rikolto Tanzania, together with the Arusha City Council through the AfriFoodLinks Project, is inviting qualified contractors to take part in upgrading the vegetable section of Kilombero Market.
Kilombero Market, established in 1969, is one of Arusha’s busiest urban markets. Every day it serves more than 15,000 customers and provides livelihoods for about 500 vendors, most of them women and young people. Despite its vital role, the market struggles with outdated stalls, poor drainage, limited waste management, and inadequate storage facilities. This project aims to modernise the vegetable section so it can stand as a model for safer, cleaner, and better-managed urban markets in the city.

The contractor will be expected to:
- Clear and prepare the site
- Construct the new market section as per the design
- Install proper drainage and waste management systems
- Complete finishing works that meet hygiene and safety standards
- Undertake any other works outlined in the BoQ and technical drawings
Expected Deliverables
- Fully upgraded vegetable section, ready for use
- Bi-weekly progress updates, reviewed by the City Council’s engineer
- A final handover report at completion
