About the Role
The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is looking for ambitious graduates with a passion for science to join as Research Officer Interns. This internship is part of the Transmission Zero (T0) Programme – a global initiative dedicated to developing advanced genetic tools to stop the spread of malaria in Africa.
The successful candidate will receive hands-on training in genomics and transgenesis, working within a biosafety level 3 (BSL3) laboratory. This is a unique chance to gain world-class research skills while contributing directly to Tanzania’s fight against malaria.
What You’ll Be Doing
During this internship, you will:
- Work under strict biosafety protocols in a BSL3 laboratory.
- Assist in laboratory experiments involving DNA, RNA, and protein analysis.
- Learn and apply molecular biology methods such as PCR, DNA/RNA sequencing, and gel electrophoresis.
- Support microinjection experiments and help screen gene-edited samples using microscopy.
- Contribute to the maintenance of malaria parasite cultures used in experimental studies.
- Assist in performing membrane feeding assays (direct and standard).
- Help refine laboratory protocols and keep research equipment in good working condition.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments.
- Present findings and participate actively in team meetings.
What We’re Looking For
Qualifications
- A degree in a science-related field, preferably Molecular Biology or Biotechnology.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong teamwork skills, but also able to work independently when required.
- Practical knowledge of molecular biology or parasitology techniques (hands-on lab skills are a plus).
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- High motivation and curiosity to learn advanced laboratory methods.
