This learnership offers young South Africans the opportunity to receive world-class training in blood specimen collection and laboratory practices, while gaining exposure to one of the country’s leading pathology laboratories.
The programme will be hosted across multiple provinces, including Gauteng, Pretoria, Limpopo, North West, Mpumalanga, and Free State.
About the Programme
This is a 24-month structured learnership designed to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and values required to perform professional phlebotomy techniques.
What you’ll gain:

Preparation for the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) board examination
Upon successful completion and passing of the HPCSA board exam, learners will qualify as Phlebotomy Technicians, eligible for registration with the HPCSA. This opens career opportunities in medical pathology laboratories and blood donation organisations across South Africa.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following academic criteria:

Matric / National Senior Certificate (NSC)

English (Home Language or First Additional Language): Level 4 (50–59%)

Life Sciences: Level 4 (50–59%)

Mathematics: Level 3 (40–49%) OR Mathematical Literacy: Level 4 (50–59%)
Key Responsibilities
As a learner, you will be responsible for:

Attending formal lectures, practical training, and completing assignments
-
Preparing for and writing the HPCSA board examination

Collecting venous and capillary blood, as well as non-blood specimens, from patients and donors
-
Implementing housekeeping procedures, safety protocols, and legal requirements
-
Providing patient care with professionalism and empathy
Note: Learners are responsible for their own accommodation, meals, and transport. The programme requires a 42.5-hour work week.
