Role Purpose
Lead the workshop function for a sisal production operation—planning, directing, and controlling maintenance and repair of all farm machinery and vehicles (tractors, decorticators, fibre-processing lines, utility vehicles, etc.). You will own preventive maintenance, spares and tools management, safety compliance, and team leadership to keep field operations reliable, efficient, and cost-effective.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Maintenance
- Oversee diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of all farm machinery and vehicles to maximise uptime and performance.
- Build and execute a preventive maintenance calendar with clear service intervals, checklists, and shutdown plans.
- Track machine utilisation and fuel efficiency; drive actions that reduce downtime and boost productivity.
Inventory & Cost Control
- Manage stock levels for spare parts, consumables, tools, and lubricants; set reorder points and control issuance.
- Work within approved budgets; source cost-effective parts and services without compromising quality.
- Maintain vendor and contractor relationships; negotiate terms and monitor service quality.
People & Safety
- Supervise mechanics/technicians; assign work, coach, and conduct skills refreshers and toolbox talks.
- Enforce HSE standards in the workshop and field; run safety inductions and ensure PPE compliance.
- Lead emergency repairs during critical farm windows (planting, weeding, harvesting).
Documentation & Reporting
- Keep accurate records: job cards, service logs, breakdown analyses, parts usage, and fuel/oil consumption.
- Produce periodic reports on equipment condition, costs, and KPIs (MTBF, MTTR, availability).
- Ensure compliant disposal of used oils, filters, and other hazardous waste per environmental guidelines.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify process gaps and implement upgrades—better tooling, revised workflows, and practical technology adoption (e.g., CMMS, barcoding for spares).
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years managing maintenance/repair of agricultural machinery, vehicles, and equipment.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of tractors, decorticators, and fibre-processing machinery.
- Proven team supervision: task allocation, coaching, performance follow-up.
- Familiarity with building systems/infrastructure supporting workshop operations.
- Solid understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Age: 30–45 years.
