About the Opportunity
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has opened applications for 200 Trainee Provincial Inspector posts, one of the province’s largest youth employment and training intakes.
This programme is designed to develop young South Africans into skilled traffic officers who will play an active role in road safety, law enforcement, and compliance management across KwaZulu-Natal. Beyond training, it serves as a stepping stone to a sustainable career in public service and transport management.
Role Purpose
Trainee Provincial Inspectors will undergo structured training, workplace exposure, and professional development. The programme equips recruits with the discipline, technical knowledge, and public service ethos needed to reduce road accidents, ensure compliance, and maintain safe traffic flow throughout the province.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for enrolment, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent (NQF Level 4)
- Valid Code B driving licence (manual transmission)
- No criminal record – all candidates will undergo full SAPS clearance screening
- Medical certificate (not older than 3 months) from a doctor/clinic confirming the ability to perform strenuous exercise
- Must pass a full State medical examination before appointment
- Age limit: Not older than 35 years on the first day of enrolment
- Must be a South African Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Must be a fit and proper person, capable of performing the duties of a traffic officer

Key Duties
As a Trainee Provincial Inspector, responsibilities will include:
- Enforcing road traffic, passenger, and transport legislation
- Executing planned and approved law enforcement operations
- Directing traffic to ensure free flow in congested areas
- Safeguarding and managing accident scenes, reporting hazardous locations
- Participating in traffic policing projects, including speed testing
- Issuing notices and conducting arrests under relevant legislation
- Attending court and giving evidence when required
- Escorting abnormal loads and vehicles to ensure safety
- Managing overload control for goods and passenger transport
- Examining driver’s licences and motor vehicles for compliance
- Monitoring Driver Licence Testing Centres (DLTC) and Vehicle Testing Stations (VTS) for adherence to standards
